In high school Melanie decided that she wanted to participate in a project where high school students travel to the Dominican Republic for one weekto live and work with the poor. The project is named D.R.E.A.M.S.(Dominican Republic Education And Medical Support). Students actually live in a home that one of the families offers while they build a new home for a family in need. The week involves living with the poor, like the poor (no running water, no electricity, primitive conditions). Melanie was so moved by her experience that she decided in university she wanted to take Global Studies and Spanish. She applied to Laurier University, Ontario, Canada and was accepted. During her time at Laurier, while obtaining her degree, she created a club and initiated the same trip she took in high school for her university colleagues. It was her belief in the power of this experience that motivated her to work to create this club and organize this trip. Her efforts were so successfulthat now D.R.E.A.M.S. has eight other universities
that take this trip. Melanie along with one of her friends, co-ordinates
all these trips. She does this while working full time at Scotiabank
International as Project Coordinator.
Melanie is an energetic, talented and loving young woman who always found time to help the poor!
