This story is about a track and field championship in Pasco, Washington. It was the senior girls 3,200 metre race. The winner, Nicole C. won the race by 3.05 seconds. This put her well ahead of the second place finisher. However, after the race, one of the judges disqualified Nicole, for stepping outside of her lane. Everyone thought that the judge was in error. Upon reviewing the video tape it was clear that the judge had made an error. The title was still awarded to the second place finisher, Andrea N.
When it came time for the medals to be distributed all girls who had finished in the top eight lined up on the platform. When Andrea was awarded her medal, she stepped off the platform, walked over to Nicole and put the medal around her neck. She said, "It's your medal". Nicole said she felt chills and thought the act was incredible as she knew that it was not Andrea's fault. She was touched by the gesture.
What followed is as moving. Each girl that won the subsequent 7 medals passed it on to the girl ahead of her, who had surrendered her medal to the previous finisher. The coaches looked on with admiration and pride.
Fianlly, the last girl who finished the race in eight place, Lyndy D. gave her medal to the girl who placed seventh. As a result, the eight place finisher did not get a medal. To rectify this, Nicole who had competed in the 800 and finished eighth, surrendered her medal to Lyndy. Now it seemed that everything was right.
Excellent job ladies. That is true sporstWOMANship!
